Babel Junction

Babel Junction is set in Dalston, Hackney, London, a diverse area of cultures and faiths. Hackney district nurse Evelyn Brewster is from the Caribbean. She suffers a miscarriage, and the spirit of her Tante Melda begins to possess her. Evelyn’s quest for motherhood seems fulfilled by a spirit-child Faith, but this takes her over the edge, forcing ex-patient Chava and her boyfriend, Fex, karaoke singer Pukalani Crow, and kebab shop worker Kerim to face their own demons.

Babel Junction was co-written by Akkas Al-Ali, Samina Baig, Stacy Makishi, Jessica Smerin and McMillan. It was a Maya Productions, directed by Suzanne Gorman, with dramaturgy by Christopher Preston, and designed by Paul Burgess, and performed at the Hackney Empire Bullion Theatre 26 April-14 May 2006.
